A hoax virus is not a virus at all but a warning of impending doom that will result from a virus that doesn't even exist. Hoax viruses appear as an email and carry and impassioned plea for the reader to be on the lookout for some virus that is allegedly making the rounds and leaving a path of destruction in its wake.
NOTE: These viruses do not damage your computer but they cause mass chaos and confusion.
